Name Mariela CampoAbout [FOR SELECTED PROJECTS, please click "work" in top right corner] .:Mariela Campo :: From DJ to Green Designer:. In 2002 Mariela took the plunge from working as a Disc Jockey + Music Publicist into the world of interior design. Seeking a truly creative career, she moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design. There she earned a degree in interior design, including courses in set design, art history and a summer spent in Paris, studying French architecture and interiors. Upon graduation, Mariela accepted a Design Assistant position in New York, working with popular designer Doug Wilson of Trading Spaces on his new show Moving Up at BBC New York and The Learning Channel. She was delighted to begin her design career this way, setting her on a busy path of set styling and art direction for TV shows in NYC and Toronto ever since. One of her highlights upon returning to Toronto, was completing a dynamic assignment as a Set Stylist for HGTV Canada, where she was responsible for designing, sourcing, and producing 33 different model suite sets for a new game show entitled Design To Win. She also consulted on the overall design of the permanent set and personally designed the modern illuminated podiums used on the show. Her design work has appeared on HGTV Canada and The Learning Channel [Canada/U.S.]. Prior to becoming an Interior Designer, Mariela earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, followed by studies in public relations, radio broadcasting and languages. She is fully fluent in Spanish and French. In her previous career as a Publicist, Mariela’s experiences included Sony Music, where she was a key Latin liaison for artists such as Ricky Martin, Julio Iglesias and Gloria Estefan. While working in the music industry, Mariela enjoyed working as a radio and club Disc Jockey. Also within the entertainment realm, her publicity projects included The Comedy Network and The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. An eternal adventurer, Mariela has lived in Toronto, Montréal, Paris, Barcelona, Los Angeles and New York City. Her experiences living abroad and her travels to Asia have greatly influenced her design philosophy. Her favourite design aesthetics range from modern to post-modern, often fused with exotic elements. She also has a soft spot for the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods and a love for contrasting raw industrial materials with soft, glamorous fabrics and finishes. Her keen interest in green and sustainable design began during her schooling years at Parsons, where she was inspired to take industrial objects [such as shipping containers and rooftop water tanks] and recycle them, converting them into useful and beautiful objects for everyday use. Mariela’s passion for green design prompted her to share her finds with the world, so she founded and maintains www.GreenDesignGirl.com, a popular site dedicated to modern sustainable design. Recently, Mariela was thrilled to make the final cut of 10 finalists, chosen from hundreds of applicants, as a contestant in HGTV Canada’s Designer Superstar Challenge. She was also proud to be the sole designer from her home city of Toronto. The series aired to 5.6 million HGTV Canada subscribed viewers and was presented three times, with numerous repeats, throughout the winter, spring and summer of 2007. Mariela would be interested in hearing about on-camera design opportunities. Please feel free to inquire about her demo reel, which is in the works for 2011.
