Mariela Campo is an Interior Designer, Production Designer and Set Decorator with a degree from Parsons School of Design, where she studied at the New York and Paris campuses. She has over eleven years of experience in interior design projects and production design for film and TV, in both Canada and the U.S. Her projects have included CTV Toronto, BBC New York, The Space Channel, HGTV Canada and The Canadian Film Centre.
In summer of 2015, Mariela was Production Designer for the supernatural thriller feature film Adams Testament, starring Luke Bilyk [Degrassi] and Zoe de Grand Maison [Orphan Black].
Mariela was also Set Decorator and Prop Master for the horror indie film festival hit Berkshire County, which had its theatrical release in June of 2015. Of her work on Berkshire County, Director Audrey Cummings kindly stated:
“She did a fantastic job and found strong and interesting choices to bring our vision to life. I was impressed with her work every day when I walked onto set. … She was one of the hardest working people we had on set and I think the production would have suffered without her.”
Prior to Berkshire County, Mariela was Production Designer for Lunchbox Loser, a 90’s-set dark comedy which earned awards at festivals in Toronto and New York and was also an official selection of the Festival de Cannes' Short Film Corner.
A former English Major, DJ and Music Publicist, she has lived in New York, Paris, Barcelona and Montréal and is currently based in her home city of Toronto. Fluent in Spanish and French, her work is often influenced by her travels. A big fan of period piece dramas, she is inspired by the Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Bauhaus movements, as well as the science fiction genre, Victorian Gothic art and architecture and Japanese culture and design.
Mariela has extensive design research and props/set decor buying experience with an international list of suppliers. She endeavours to stay ahead of design trends and especially loves to spot the frequent crossover influences between fashion and interior design.
A special interest in sustainable design prompted her to found GreenDesignGirl.com in January of 2008. At the time of its inception, hers was the first site solely dedicated to covering the latest in green interior design and eco-friendly home products.
On-camera, Mariela appeared as a design finalist on Designer Superstar Challenge, which aired to 5.6 million viewers on HGTV Canada.
An avid lover of interior design and production design, she is equally passionate about both and genuinely thrives in a creative setting.
